What It Is
Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows you how your site is performing in search. One of the things it tracks is broken pages; URLs that people tried to visit, or that Google tried to crawl, and got an error instead of a real page.
These are called 404 errors, and most websites accumulate them quietly over time. A page gets deleted. A URL changes. An old blog post gets moved. The original address still exists in Google’s index, but there’s nothing there anymore.
Why It Matters
Every broken page is a dead end. Someone follows a link, lands on an error, and leaves. Google visits the page, finds nothing, and loses trust in your site a little bit at a time.
The fix is called a redirect. It tells Google and your visitors: “That page moved. Here’s where it is now.” But finding all the broken pages, figuring out where they should point, and setting up the redirects is tedious work that most businesses never get around to.
